Leaders in Training Program at Camp Wasaga

Camp Wasaga offers this program for young people (14 years of age and older) who are interested in developing their own leadership skills in an outdoor/camp setting. The program include skills development and activity planning in a nature-focused program, covering topics such as nature games, crafts, hikes, canoeing, kayaking and overnight camping trips.

The LIT program offers young campers the opportunity to increase their independence and confidence by attending Camp Wasaga without their parents. LITs are supervised by the LIT Coordinator and the Camp Director. Their behaviour must be consistent with the standards established by Camp. A curfew is enforced.

We offer two levels of LIT training:

  1. LIT I - involves a week of learning which includes an overnight camping trip, theory, practice (working in age-specific groups with Leaders) and the opportunity to run programs such as campfires and talent shows. The youth will also work on canoe, kayak and orienteering skills.
  2. LIT II - involves two weeks of learning which includes a two-night overnight camping trip, theory, a stronger emphasis on practice and a first-aid course. These youths will learn to teach others canoe, kayak and orienteering skills as well as be more involved in running program activities such as night games, archery and team sports.
